This week we continued with our insect theme, looking more closely at metamorphosis in caterpillars and the life cycle of other creatures. The children have particularly engaged with the changes that take place in a caterpillar. We have discussed the correct terms for the chrysalis and how the caterpillar becomes the butterfly. We have some flash cards which describe the process of change frogs go through, along with corn and chickens. This activity required the children to place the flash cards in order and engendered interesting conversations about why they chose to put the cards in that particular order. This activity was completed one on one with Jess which is also important for the children to get that interaction with an adult.
The children have been working hard on producing art work which will be displayed within the room. This fortnight, they have been creating pictures which have involved the insects we have been looking at. The children are then asked to identify what is happening in their picture. The stories which the right questions produce can provide a lot of insight into not only how the child has understood what we are learning about, but also how they are coping at kinder. Often drawings will reveal more in depth feelings than children of this age express. Before the end of the term, each child will have a picture they draw analysed using this method of questioning. This will be included within their portfolio.
On Monday the 15th of June we will have David the Music Man come for an incursion. This is an excellent incursion which will introduce the children to interesting musical instruments. We hope all of the children will be there!
