Welcome back to Term 2 Koalas!
We hope you enjoyed your Easter break! If any of the children have any photos to share with the group, feel free to bring them in and we can discuss them at group time.
This first week back has seen the return of Karen as co-educator. This will provide the children with more stability and ensure smoother transitions. We have already noticed a change for the positive in the children’s dispositions. As Karen’s son is still unwell, she may miss the occasional session, however, Fiona will be able to slot back into the group.
As we are becoming more settled within the room, we are required to practise fire drills and listening for instruction if either educator blows their whistle. We began this by discussing the whistle that Jess wears around her neck and what it could be used for. This was followed with a discussion of fire and whether it was hot or cold and how it could hurt us and the kinder. Though learning about the fire drill is essential for the children’s safety, these skills are also transferable in terms of observation, and listening and responding to instruction.
During this term, the children will be able to engage in more open-ended art activities. There will be a range of materials for them to practise their fine motor skills via cutting, pasting and drawing. This will be complimented with a permanent sensory table. This will assist in calming the children along with giving them the opportunity to manipulate different materials with their hands. As the term progresses, more writing and drawing opportunities will be made available along with a push for recognising letters and sounds. This will all be informal learning and subject to the children’s interest and development.
