We have had a few special days at kinder this week which have given the children the opportunity to engage in different activities and cultures.
A new fortnight means a new focus for our room and this fortnight we look at working on our independence, others around us and our greater community. These will bring together three large group activities which we will engage in; Shrove (Pancake) Tuesday, Chinese New Year and Clean Up Australia Day.
Tuesday was Shrove (Pancake) Tuesday. This gave the children the opportunity to engage in a cooking experience. The children assisted Fiona to measure out the ingredients, crack the eggs and stir the batter. Though the group was split into two, some children helped to cook twice! After our parent helpers cooked the pancakes for us, we had a pancake party at the end of the session. Eating the pancakes was definitely the best part!
We are also looking at the world around us as Thursday was Chinese New Year. We firstly learnt how to say Happy New Year in Mandarin – Gong Xi Fa Cai! We also listened to some Mandarin music relating to the holiday and Jess played a story about Nian for us during our mat time to help explain why the Chinese people celebrate the New Year with fireworks and dragons. Though this was new for many of us, we really embraced the different culture. It is important for the children to engage with cultures other than their own in a way which is relevant to them; stories and music are a great introduction.
Within the room, Jess and Fiona noticed the development of cooperative play from parallel play. Parallel play is typical of children of this age; when engaged in parallel play, the children will play side by side, exchange some toys and conversation but largely play alone. Cooperative play involves the children engaged in play together, creating alongside one another and converse to further the play. Cooperative play develops as the children mature and is facilitated by learning experiences which require discussion and interaction.
Next Friday is Clean Up Australia Day; we will engage in some related activities and examine how we look after our kinder and our community.
