It was great to see the smiling faces coming in the door on the first day of this term, and the enthusiasm for getting back to Kindergarten.
Our room has been re-organised and the centre double table was set up as a construction table, with boxes, pieces of cardboard, lots of bits and pieces of paper, materials, icypole sticks, lids etc, sticky tape, scissors and paste were also on the table and the results were up to the children and their imaginations. Help was given if the children needed help to make their structures strong. As well as encouraging the children to explore the materials provided to create their ideas, this activity also helps to develop their fine muscle skills using the scissors, tape dispensers etc, and learning how to manipulate the materials.
We will be having many activities to strengthen the children’s fine muscles and co-ordination, to help make their fingers strong enough to move on to writing. Some children already write their own names, we encourage this if they show an interest in trying. Language is so important , this also encompasses stories and discussions. We have lots of stories and will explore writing our own stories, with the children contributing their own ideas to these stories.
We also explored what happens when you mix colours. The children helped to make the play dough- we had 2 colours- blue and yellow – these were separate, but we wondered what would happen when we mixed them- the result was a beautiful shade of green. We will further explore colour mixing using other mediums.
Outside was very cold but we put on lots of warm clothes and played outside anyway. Please make sure your children have warm clothes and strong shoes or gumboots – fresh air is good for us.
We will not be having Dancing for the next three weeks, as Karen is away overseas, but we enjoyed our music session with Kylie, who told the children the Aboriginal Dreamtime Story of ”The Rainbow Serpent”. We have a map of Australia on our wall and will be learning about Australia and the World.
What will happen next week?
