GROUP A REFLECTIONS – WEEK 13TH – 16TH MAY 2014
Another busy week !
We were excited to welcome our new rabbit family (replacing the other family as the mother rabbit was sick and need to go back) – now we have beautiful “Ash” and her 6 tiny baby kittens – only a few days old – their eyes still shut and only just starting to grow their fur .They have been snuggled in their soft warm bed, but we were able to part the straw and have careful peep, but we are not able to touch them yet. This family will stay with us for 4 weeks. I’m not sure who is more besotted – the children or the teachers. This is a great hands on learning experience for the children
Following Mothers Day, the children made a special thank you card for the Florist who donated all the flowers to us – Michael at “Fresh Cut Flowers” – I delivered this to him with our thanks. This is a very kind, generous donation for him to make, and it would be great if you could all support his stall “Fresh Cut Flowers” at the Prahran Market.
With the Autumn colours all around in the garden- the children made their own beautiful autumn leaves with eye droppers and edicol dye. These will be displayed in our room. The children are enjoying raking and collecting the leaves blowing around in our playground – it really is a special time of the year !
Our vegetables are thriving in our vegetable garden – so we cooked silver beet muffins last week. The children went out to the vegetable garden and picked some of our silver beet, which we then washed and shredded, and mixed this with the other ingredients to make the muffin mixture – it was well stirred by all children who wanted a turn, then we put it into the patty pans and into the oven. When cooked – we ate them for afternoon tea – all the children tried them – some didn’t like them, some asked for more. This experience encourages children to think where their food comes from, what is healthy food, and how great it is to grow our own food – fresh from our garden. We will cook more things from our garden as they are ready.
We have set up a Hospital in our room, which has been a very popular spot – some of the children have recently had Doctor/ Hospital experiences , so this gave us a starting point for our discussions. We will learn about Hospital procedures, what instruments Doctors use- stethoscopes etc,
X Rays, ways of getting patients to Hospital – helicopters, planes, ambulances etc. We will look at X-Rays the children have brought to show us. The children administered to each other, bandaged each other , and wrote industriously on the medication note pads, while others organised things or waited in the waiting room. We will explore this further – there is a lot to learn about.
What will happen next week?
