Welcome to all our families - the start of a new year, and the children have settled very well into our Kindergarten routine.
Starting at staggered times, with a few new children starting each day until all children are attending works very well, enabling the children to meet each other quietly, getting to know each other and the Teachers, learning each others names, and becoming familiar with the Kindergarten routines.
We provided a variety of activities, encouraging the children to explore indoors and outdoors. Activities were set up to enable the children to find a quiet spot by themselves if they wished, or encouraging them to join in activities with others.
Despite the hot weather, the children explored enthusiastically, interacting and engaging with each other, having conversations about what they were doing, sharing ideas. To counteract the heat we provided lots of water play – water in the sandpit, water in water troughs, fish in a water tray, water painting, washing our trucks with water and paint brushes. A very popular activity was a large tray with water and blocks of ice, with a collection of animals that live in cold climates – polar bears, penguins , seals.
One of the busiest tables indoors was set up as a Zoo, with a variety of animals, trees, logs etc – many of the children are familiar with the Zoo so this activity encouraged them to share their experiences.
At mat time we have been talking about creatures that live in the sea, and things the children might find at the beach, and we have displays of beach items including shells, crab shells, coral, sponges, even a Port Jackson Shark’s egg. We have posters to look at and a number of Reference Books about the sea and sea creatures.
The children are encouraged to look at these Reference Books which are on display, and the children have been looking at them by themselves and with other children, we read these books with them – encouraging curiosity and the desire to find out more information.
It has been a very busy week – What will happen next week ?
