GROUP A REFLECTIONS – WEEK 11TH – 14TH MARCH 2014.
Our Programme is always planned to follow the children’s interests and ideas –a s the children had been talking about hair dressing, this week we set up a hair dressing salon in home corner – with extra mirrors, chairs arranged in front of these, and a selection of items to give the children ideas – aprons, bottles and jars, brushes and hair dryers etc. Many of the children were engaged in this corner and some wonderful imaginative play ensued - I must say many of the leading players were boys – I think we might have some hairdressers in our midst.
Our aim is to encourage the children to use their imaginations when playing – this week after all our fish activities, we had a table set up with tiny frogs, a pond, lily pads, and magic stones, and some wonderful interactions and conversations took place – we had fun singing about frogs, and we will learn more about frogs. On the hot day, we had arctic animals in ice again to cool us down and inspire more discussions and conversations.
Many of these children spend much time building in the block corner, so to add another perspective to this we put out a long length of red coloured, fabric covered timber on the floor, and added some very small natural wooden blocks – the children used these blocks quite differently to the bigger blocks in block corner with some fascinating constructions and creations.
We made play dough with the children at the beginning of the week – the children measured the ingredients and followed the recipe, then kneaded their own dough for us to use. Cooking includes science concepts as well – following instructions, measuring, mixing, seeing what happens when ingredients are mixed and when they are cooked.
Later in the week – we did some real cooking – we made a Chocolate Slice and Honey Joys on Thursday, again with the children measuring the ingredients and following the recipes, then we made Fairy bread on Friday, as we planned a partyon Friday, to sadly say goodbye to Lily who is returning to Germany to live. So on Friday we set up a long table outside under our veranda, and we all sat around the table and ate all the goodies we had cooked. The children had made a secret goodbye card for Lily and we also gave her a book of photographs of herself and her friends playing at Kindergarten as a memento to take with her, we wish her and her family well.
Another exciting happening during the week –one of our families have had a new baby – so we heard all about this with Sydney giving us lengthy explanations all about this. Congratulations!
