Welcome to kinder Kangaroos and families!
We have a mixed group this year with some of us completing a second year of three year old kinder and able to lead the younger Kangaroos. This has already led to some great discussions at mat times about room “rules” and helping each other. The children have had a staggered start to kinder with some starting Monday 02/02, Tuesday 03/02 and Friday 06/02. This gave us time to settle in to kinder and for those of us who are new to Armadale, it allowed the opportunity to explore the room with fewer children.
We have spent half of our time inside the room, engaging in various learning experiences designed to help us settle into the room and understand the daily routine. The children have particularly enjoyed playdough, painting, puzzles and the cars. Through these activities, we have got to know each other and have explored our current understanding. While inside we have had group times where we have read books together such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Dear Zoo, The Very Hungry Bear, We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and A Tiger Came to Tea. We have also begun to explore our bodies more through movement and some drama. During these groups times we also sing songs which the children suggest and lead sometimes. This gives them the confidence to speak in front of the group and ensures their ideas are heard.
We then spend the other half of our sessions outside. While outside we engage in a variety of activities including sand play, water play, games and dramatic play. The great space that we have outside ensures that we can challenge our physical limitations and improve our gross motor skills. The four year old extended hours group have also been joining us while we have been outside. This has provided an opportunity for us to work with older children and develop our social skills such as sharing.
